Abstract

21,618. Schlotfeldt, H. W. Oct. 28. Speed indicators.-A cylinder 1, Fig. 1, attached to a vertical hollow shaft 2 and a trunnion 3. contains a cylinder 5 which is attached to a tube 6 that passes through the hollow shaft and is connected to a pressure gauge, Fig. 3. An inner tube, attached to the bottom of the main tube, forms an annular space with it which is not open to the inner cylinder but communicates with the outer one by means of holes 14 in the main tube and grooves 13 in the top of the inner cylinder. The inner cylinder and the annular space between the cylinders are occupied by a liquid such as mercury, communication between the two columns being maintained through passages 10 in the bottom, and holes in the trunnion. On rotation of the outer cylinder, in which there is an air-hole, the raised liquid flows into the grooves and chokes the holes, and, on a greater speed of rotation being attained, a rarefaction of the air in the gauge occurs, owing to the recession of the liquid in the inner cylinder. A modification allows an increase of pressure in the outer cylinder to affect the gauge. Pressure gauges.-The pressure gauge in Fig. 3 consists of concentric tubes 22, 21 with a float 23, which communicate through a well and a bottom tube 26.
