Abstract

20,591. Fairweather, W., [Palmer Bros. Co.]. Oct. 15. Quilting-machines; tying or knotting.-Relates to a machine for making bed quilts composed of two sheets of fabric, with an interposed filling, tied together at intervals. The fabric C' is fed forwards a definite distance by a rotating ridged cylinder 41, which descends, is rotated by a rack, pinion, and ratchet mechanism, and rises and folds the fabric into the grooves in arms 42, Fig. 14. A needle 51 now descends, and passes its thread through the fold as indicated in Fig. 12 ; a hook 84 now descends, takes the loop, and moves backwards, while the needle is withdrawn from the fold. A looper 69, which can rotate and move up and down, now, as indicated in Fig. 15, forms a loop, through which passes the hooked end of the spiral 68. After a turn and a half of the spiral has passed through the loop, the automatically - operated nippers 98 rise, the spiral reverses its rotation, and its hooked end draws the double thread twice through the loop. The spiral then descends, grips the knot, and holds it whilst the retreating nippers draw the knot tight, after which the ends of the thread are cut by an automatically-operated blade 122, Fig. 23, and the parts return to their initial position. The projection 121 facilitates the stripping of the knot or loop from the spiral. The cylinder 41 is carried on arms which are automatically raised and lowered and moved to the right or left so that the knots in successive rows break joint and form a quincunx pattern. When a length suitable for a quilt has been formed, the knotting-devices are automatically put out of action, while the feed goes on, and so is formed a blank space which is cut across the centre. The whole of the motions of the various parts of the machine are operated in a well-known manner, and the action of the machine is continuous and automatic.
