19,582. Hammill, W. J., and Groves, A. Oct. 1. Sifting and separating grain and seeds.-Relates to simple sifting and separating machines for farmers' use. On the frame A is mounted the hopper B, beneath which are the two sieve shoes C, D, of which the former carries three sieves L and the latter two sieves N, S. At one end, the shoes are pivoted at d, e to vibrating levers J, which are themselves pivoted to the frame at f. The other ends of the shoes C, D are supported by links g and rollers h respectively. The lever J is actuated by a pitman I from a crank-pin on the sprocket-wheel H which drives the fan F. The sprocket-wheel H is driven by a chain E<1> from the sprocket-wheel E, which is turned by the handle a. The angular position of the board K on which the rollers h rest can be adjusted to vary the amount of agitation of the shoe D. Beneath each sieve L is a deflector M, which receives the screenings and discharges them upon the next sieve. A seed-box O is located beneath the sieve N, and is removable. The grain freed from small seeds passes over the board P, and falls on to the inclined board Q, being aspirated by the air current from the fan F. The dust is collected in a wedge-shaped casing R, which discharges at one side of the machine. A flexible .apron l allows the grain to pass from the sieve N, while preventing dust &c. from being blown back into the machine. The aspirated grain passes over a sieve S, which separates plump from shrunken wheat, oats, barley, &c., or whole from split peas. The screenings pass to a spout U, and the screened grain tails into a spout T, which delivers it to a bagger V of ordinary construction. The first and third sieves L tail on to the floor. The second sieve is provided with a discharge spout n. The upper part of the shoe C carries a wire agitator o, the horizontal part of which lies in the feed-opening of the hopper B and keeps it clear. The sieve N can be removed by letting down a hinged flap p at its outer end.
