Abstract

17,619. Baverstock, W. W. Sept. 3. Elevators ; conveyers.- Relates to improvements on the invention described in Specification No. 18,818, A.D. 1899. The apparatus is designed to transfer carcases from the hold A of a ship to a barge or quay B. Endless chains G pass around sprocket-wheels I,J,K,L, and N. The wheels J, K, and N are fixed on a beam or girder E, which overhangs the ship's side. The wheels I are adjustably mounted in a frame I' of sufficient weight to remain on the floor of the hold, and to which also cam surfaces V are fixed to right the carriers and cradles U upon which the carcases are placed to be picked up by the carriers. At the discharging.end, the wheel L and its frame L<1> are suspended by a rope m from a drum M operated by worm gear. A lateral extension L<3> rests against the side of the ship. As each carrier descends with its load, a tail-piece Q strikes a cross-bar q and the load is discharged on to a shoot P. Each carrier consists of a number of prongs on a spindle h, the ends of which are journalled in blocks h<1>, which also connect adjacent links of the chain. To maintain the pitch, one of the links, to which the block h<1> is connected, is shorter than usual.
