Abstract
8911. Lever Bros. April 30. Cutting and perforating apparatus.-Relates to machinery for cutting and punching box and carton blanks of paper &c., and is specially applicable for use in connection with printing and like machinery. Reference is made to the Specification No. 487, A.D. 1895. The blanks, which have been scored and printed in a rotary or platen press, are passed either automatically or by hand through punching and cutting devices for the purpose of removing the "salvage" or superfluous parts and trimming the edges of the blanks. The apparatus consists of two shafts b, c of which the upper one carries edge trimmers d and punches e, and the lower one a drum f which may be of various forms. In Fig. 2 the drum f carries edge trimmers d corresponding with those on the upper shaft and is provided with recesses g in positions corresponding with the punches e and containing metal blocks i beneath which are resilient buffers on springs h of india-rubber, metal, &c., the parts being held in position by stops j. The waste pieces forced into the recesses by two punches are subsequently forced out therefrom by the resilient buffers. In a modification, a drum f with recesses corresponding in position with the punches may be surrounded with a sheet of india-rubber, which is clamped in position by means of a longitudinal bar and by recesses in the inner faces of the cutters d. Or the drum may be hollow and rotate about an eccentric shaft on which are mounted loose hoods carrying plungers sliding in openings corresponding to g, which pass completely through the shell of the drum. The waste pieces removed from the blanks are forced from the apertures by the plungers during the rotation of the drum. Or the waste pieces may be forced into the interior of the hollow drum f, whence they are continuously removed by an exhaust fan.
