Abstract

7472. Williams, C. April 11. Stamping; bending; drawing; punching.-Pipe elbows, crosses, and T's are made from jointless tube of a somewhat larger diameter than the branches of the angle-piece are to be. In the manufacture of aT, the blank b, Fig. 11, is placed on a mandrel a, and a hole punched in it by a punch d, the scrap passing into a hole in'the mandrel, or the hole may be drilled. The blank is then placed on a divided mandrel e,f, Fig. 12, and its ends reduced to the desired size by dies g, h. By first removing the part f, the swelled part e can be withdrawn. The blank is then placed on a mandrel i, Fig. 13, and vertically-divided dies j, k pressed over it from opposite ends to transfer the swelled portion l to half-round holes in the faces of the dies, forming a bulge m with the previouslyformed hole in the centre. The bulge is then expanded by a series of punches n to form the third branch, or a head o, Fig. 14, may be placed inside and drawn outwards by a screwed rod p to form the branch. Crosses are formed in a similar manner, perforated swelled portions being formed on opposite sides, the dies j, k having half-round holes to correspond as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 13. The two bulges are then separately expanded as before. Elbows are made by bulging a blank as for a T, but without a hole. The ends are then cut obliquely, and two short mandrels q, Fig. 15, with suitably-shaped ends inserted. The blank with the mandrels in it is then bent between successive dies, of which Fig. 17 shows the finishing pair.
