Abstract

7465. Wood, T., Wood, S., and Booth, F. April.11. Wire fabrics.-A machine for making or weaving wire mattresses is provided with feed-mechanism to obtain the spirals of uniform length and reduce to a minimum the trimming of the edges of the fabric produced. Feed-rolls C, D are driven from a clutch shaft J, the driving-part M of the clutch carrying a chain-wheel T and a belt pulley. A chain U passes over the wheel T and a wheel V on a stud W adjustable on an arm X. The chain carries a suitable series of projections Y, which engages at regular intervals a clutch lever P pivoted at R, thus temporarily disengaging the clutch and stopping the feed. The number of projections in the series determines the interval of rest, the clutch lever being returned by a spring. The automatic stopping and starting of the feed ensures the uniform length of the spirals and allows the attendant time to sever and displace each spiral, so that the successive one is interlocked with it. The length of the chain may be varied to suit various lengths of mattresses. A treadle Z, connected by a chain X<1> to an arm X<2> of the clutch lever, allows the feed to be stopped at any time.
