Abstract
7242. Ramage, A. S. April 6. Varnishes.-Relates to a process for the conversion of non-drying oils, such as linseed or menhaden oil, into drying-oils suitable for the production of paints or varnishes. The linseed or other oil is heated in the steam-jacketed tank a, platinized asbestos, platinum black, or other oxygen-occluding substance is added, and ozone, from the ozonizer c, is blown through the jets d<1>. The oil produced is stated to be practically a varnish in itself. Platinized asbestos suitable for use in the process is prepared by soaking asbestos in a suitable quantity of platinum tetrachloride solution, adding formaldehyde and caustic soda, filtering, and washing.
