Abstract

6441. Weisenfeld, M. March 27. Malting.-Consists in causing grain to commence sprouting in the steeping-trough after the water has been run off. For this purpose, the grain is arranged in a number of separate layers, and means are provided for causing air to circulate through them. Fig. 1 shows one form of trough, in which the grain is arranged in vertical layers between perforated partitions a, which can be raised as indicated in dotted lines, to allow of the discharge of the grain. The air is supplied through perforated pipes g. Baffle-plates b<1> aid in effecting a thorough aÙration of the grain. Fig. 3 shows a form of apparatus in which the grain is arranged in horizontal layers on perforated floors a. Water and air are supplied successively through perforated pipes g. The discharge pipe e is made in separate sections, and, to discharge the grain, the uppermost section is first removed and the grain discharged from the top floor, and then the other sections are removed in succession.
