Ladders.- Ladder sections a are connected by pivots c<3> passing through h i n g e - plates C so that they can be extended into a straight line to form a long ladder, or secured in the position shown. by hooks d engaging with eyes d' to form a step-ladder, or trestle, or they can be folded up for transport. Flat steps, or round or square rungs, are secured between the sides a of the sections by brackets or flanged sockets, or they may be let into shallow recesses in the sides. The hinge plates are perforated to receive screws and bolts, and one plate of each pair is flanged and bent round the edge of the side a. The sections are locked together in line by a pin c<6>,which is passed through the holes c<5> in the plates, and is attached to one plate by a chain. Three or 'more sections may be pivoted together so as to fold up in a zig-zag manner. The flat hinge plates may be dispensed with, and the sections may be fastened together in line, or at an angle, by hasps, staples, and snap-hooks. For window cleaners, painters, &c., a tapered strut is pivoted to the sides of the ladder, and is secured to the top rung or one of the lower rungs by tooks. The strut is grooved to receive a window stile, rail, or the like, to hold the ladder in position. For librarians, the strut may be in the form of a shelf which can be turned up at right-angles to the ladder.
