Abstract

5780. Lake, H. H., [Grant, A. E.]. March 19. Ironing machines ; rollers or cylinders.-Relates to a machine for shaping folded collars. Fig. 1 shows a plan of the machine, Fig. 2 shows an elevation, Fig. 3 shows a vertical section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 shows a central vertical section of one of the cloth-covered rolls. The collar which has been ironed out flat in the usual manner is dampened by the application of moisture along the fold line on the inner side of the collar and is then loosely folded into V-shape and introduced into the open end of a heated trough formed by two curved plates 10, 11, one of which 10 is fixed to the other 11, is pivoted at 13, and is pressed forward by an adjustable spring 16. In the trough, the folded edge of the collar is forced down to the bottom of the trough by the arm 23, and the heat from the burner 19 causes the moisture to be converted into steam, which penetrates the plies of the collar. The inner end of the trough is curved so as gradually to bend the collar, which then passes round a rotary hollow shaping-roll 3 heated internally by a burner 5, the collar being pressed against the roll 3 by two rotary cloth-covered rolls 6, 7. The collar is then delivered on to a conical guide 30, which causes it to traverse a spiral path upwardly over the guideplate 31 where it is removed by the operator. The presser rolls, Fig. 4, comprise each a core 26, upon which the fabric 27 is wound, the edges of the fabric being introverted upon the ends of the core and clamped thereon by a screw ring or nut 28 so as to secure them in place without sewing.
