Abstract

4792. Harris, I. L. March 6. Acetylene.-Relates to acetylene generators of the type in which the carbide is automatically supplied to the generating-chamber. The carbide holder 4 is situated within a central tubular passage 3 in the gas - holder bell 2 and, when charged, it is covered by a closely-fitting tubular cap 5. At its lower end it is formed with a contracted mouth 7 fitted with a valve 11, by opening which the carbide is fed into the generating- chamber 8. The opening of the carbide supply valve is effected automatically on the descent of the gas-holder bell. For this purpose the valverod 13 is connected by a swivel joint 14 with a lever 15, pivoted at 16 and jointed at 20 to a bent rod 19, passing out through a water seal 28 and formed at its upper end with a projection 22, with which engages a yoke 23 on the gas-holder bell. In order to loosen the carbide when the valve is being opened, the valve is provided on its upper side with two or more serrated pins, and it is given a slight movement of rotation by means of an oblique guide 17 in which works a pin 18 on the valve - rod 13. The gas passes from the generating - chamber into the holder through a vertical pipe, which pipe also serves for supplying the generating - chamber with water. The pipe can be closed to the flow of gas by a cap valve 30, with guiding-sleeve 40, but water can always flow into the generating-chamber owing to the upper end of the tube being formed with a series of projections. To permit of the escape of air when supplying the generating-chamber with water, a pipe 32, fitted with a cock, is provided. The valve 30 and the cock in the air-escape pipe are connected together by a bent rod 35, so that, when one is open, the other is closed. A further pipe 36, surrounded by a suitably-perforated tube 38 carried by the bell, provides for the relief of the pressure therein. When the gas valve 30 is closed, the carbide supplying mechanism is thrown out of action, the rod 19 being displaced by means of a pin attached to the cock in the air-escape pipe.
