Abstract

4219. Aldridge, C. H. Feb. 27. Straight-bar knitting-machines.-Relates to machines of the type described in Specifications Nos. 7252 and 21,001, A.D. 1896, No. 2651, A.D. 1897, No. 22,013, A.D. 1899, and No. 54, A.D. 1900, and has for its object the production of fancy lace rib-tops, lace cuffs, glove hands, and edgings to be used for trimmings, with serrated or scalloped edges. After a cuff, rib-top, &c. has been knitted, a slack or tight course or a few rows of waste to be cut are made, and then the frame-needle loops Y, Fig. A, are pressed off, and a draw-thread course, shown in a thin line, is made. Two ordinary courses are now made, and then some of the frame-needle loops or machine-needle loops are transferred to right or left ; for instance, the loops A and B may be transferred to the needle C. A plain course is now made, and then another transferring or lace course, and so on. Welts, tuck-courses, and slack and tight courses, and openwork or lace and plain courses may be made automatically in any order. When the drawthread is removed, the loops W form a fan, as shown in Fig. B and the loops V twist up. The loops are transferred by points G or H, carried by fingers G' on bars F<4> supported by the usual brackets F<3> on shafts F<2>, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which show parts of the usual type of machine described in the above-quoted Specifications. An extra set of threads J<1>, with special guides J, may be used to wrap a coloured thread round any particular empty needle A, to produce various effects. In automatically forming tuck courses or welt courses, alternating in any order with lace and plain or ribbed courses, the various parts of the machine are controlled by four sets of cams, any set of which can be brought into action by shogging the cam shaft into four different positions, or by shogging the cam shaft ipto two or three positions, and the trucks into the other positions. In order to prevent wear of the trucks K<1>, Figs. 3 and 4, they are bored out larger than the pin K, and the annular space is filled in with bearing-rollers K<3> retained by washers K<3>. Lubricating-channels are marked K<4>.
