Abstract
4136. Imray, O., [Hyde, C.]. Feb. 26. Water-tube boilers; stays; joints and connections. -Bent water tubes 8 depend from a steam drum 5, and enter a vertical column 4, in the lower part of which sediment collects. Feedwater is delivered downwardly into the top of the column 4. The steam drum stays have screw shackles 7 for adjustment. The casing surrounding the annular flue space containing the tubes is constructed of flange metal plates with an internal lining, the plates being jointed by cement in grooves B', Fig. 4, in the flanges. The steam-pipes and feed-pipe pass through the casing through joints consisting of plates 14, Fig. 3, loosely fitting the pipe and capable of sliding in guide-strips as shown. A suitable cement for making the joint in the casing consists of linseed oil 50 parts, soapstone 200 parts, and plumbago 5 parts.
