Abstract

3316. Greeves, M. M., and Lucas, T. Feb. 15. Rollers and roller heads.- The drawing-rollers of flaxpreparing machines are provided with scrapers or cleaners b, of which two sets are mounted on a shell C, which is connected to the shaft D by a spring, the shaft itself being mounted in spring brackets F, G, whereby the scrapers are normally pressed against the roller A. The shaft D may be rotated a half revolution at intervals, either by hand or automatically, for the purpose of changing the scrapers, and bringing those which are loaded with waste fibre into contact with a rotary cleaning-brush H. The shaft D is provided with cams engaging with the frame, whereby the first effect of the rotation of the shaft is to depress the scrapers out of contact with the roller A, and, when the scrapers are clear of the roller, the casing C is rapidly rotated by its spring, stops m, M being provided to prevent the casing from rotating too far. When the shaft D has completed a half revolution, it is again in its highest position, and the stops m, M are clear of one another. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement for operating the shaft D intermittently. A ratchet arrangement r, r<2> is connected by spur gearing with the shaft D, and the pawl lever r<1> is connected with a slide R, which is operated in one direction by a pin p on the face of the ratchetwheel P, and in the other by the engagement of a stud o<2> on the pawl lever o' with the projection s<1> on the lever or link S pivoted to the slide R. When the stud p is moving the slide R to the left, the lever S is held in the position shown by a spring latch s<3>, which is released when the movement of the bar R to the left is blocked by the stop R<2>, thereby allowing the lever S to fall and bring the stop s<1> into a suitable position to be moved to the right by the stud o<2> at its next oscillation. The stud o<2> simultaneously operates the lever x, whereby the lever S is again raised into the position shown, and supported therein by the spring latch s<3> until the stud p has made another revolution. A slight modification of the drop-lever arrangement is described.
