Abstract

1436. Gray, C. H. Jan. 22. Loom shedding-motions; healds; warp tension, regulating.-Woven fabrics, such as those for hose pipes, pneumatic tyres, and cotton driving- belts, are produced in a loom having healds E, E<1>, carrying mails F, F', which are arranged in tines inclined downwards in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 2. When the healds are worked in the usual way, the warp threads, between which the shuttle has passed during a pick, grip the weft thread in succession, and sufficient weft can be drawn from the shuttle to allow the bending of the thread, without resulting in the fabric being unduly strained. By using four healds worked in pairs so as to form two sheds, similar in form, but reversed, the tensions of the warp threads may be kept constant during the shedding-motions; in this case, the shuttle passes through one shed only, the other being altogether inoperative. Lifting or straining mechanism may also be used for regulating the tension, instead of the additional healds. Fabrics with the patterns uniformly or otherwise diversified, waved, rippled, or corrugated may be woven in the manner described.
