Abstract

Hubs.-Relates to the steering and driving of motor vehicles, and comprises a construction of the hub and axle whereby each wheel may be turned for steering purposes on a central vertical axis, or may be driven alone or both steered and driven. Fig. 1 shows in elevation, partly in section, one form of the hub and axle. The wheel hub 1 is open at one end and closed at the other, the closed end being formed with an inwardlyprojecting sleeve 2 in which is rigidly secured the short axle 3. On the axle 3 are loose sleeves held on by a nut 19 and provided with races for ball bearings which are held in the casing 7 and adjusted by a lock-nut 8. The casing 7 has at top and bottom sunk recesses for the cup portions 12 of the ball bearings, on which it is supported in the axle 15 so as to be capable of turning about a vertical axis, the pivots being formed by nuts 14 whereby the ball bearings can be adjusted.
