17,685. Gaines, W. Oct. 5. Printing on tiles, glass, metal plates, and other rigid surfaces. Relates to a transfer printing - arrangement applicable to lithographic, collotype, or letterpress printing- machines. Fig. 1 shows a a collotype machine, of which B is the bed, reciprocating on rollers C, and carrying a printing- surface P. D is the cylinder operated by racks B<2> on the bed, and B' the inking- rollers, all of usual form. On the cylinder B is fixed a transfer sheet L, of rubber, which takes the impression from the printing-surface P, and transfers it to the tile &c. N, which is placed in a secondary carriage I reciprocating in inclined guides J. On the carriage I are racks O engaging with segmental wheels K on the cylinder, and with gears R. The upper parts of the guides J are hinged as at S, so that they and the carriage I therein may be swung over by a rack W into the position shown in dotted lines at 1, for removal and insertion of a tile N. When in the upper pivoted part of the guides J, the carriage I is engaged and held by pins Q. The hinged parts of the guides may be duplicated, so that two carriages may be employed to print alternately. The second hinged guide may be pivoted so as to swing as shown by the line 2. The racks W, W<1> on slide-rods V, V<1> operated by levers U, U<1> and cams on the shaft H<1> operate the guides and carriages alternately. The tiles may be delivered from the carriage when in the position shown at 1 by hooked levers Y, pivoted on the slide 5, reciprocated intermittently by a lever 4 and cam. The levers Y have also a rising and falling movement, imparted to them by a rod 8, lever 7, and cam, so that they remove the tile from the carriage and place it on an endless delivery band 12.
