Abstract
17,618. Mitchell, W. May 17, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Vapour lamps. - The pressure in the reservoir A necessary to force the gasoline from the reservoir to the vaporizing- coil F is obtained in the first instance by means of the air pump B, and is maintained subsequently by the return to the reservoir through the pipe U of vapour generated in the coils F in excess of that consumed at the burner J. When starting the lamp, the air issuing from the outlet b of the air pump B impinges upon and agitates the gasoline, which thereupon gives off a certain amount of vapour. Upon opening the valve c<1>, this vapour traverses the pipe D, the channel e, and the coils F, and is ignited at the burner. The ends F<1> of the two coiled copper tubes F are attached to the upper ends of the U -shaped channeled piece E, and the other ends h<1> are connected to a channeled piece G, of which the outlet nozzle g<2> is controlled by a needle valve I. The bell-shaped depending baffle L, and the cylindrical casing H, H<1>, rapidly conduct from the flame sufficient heat to vaporize the gasoline supplied to the coils F by the pipe U, the filter R, S, and the channel e, and, when the valve I is opened, the vapour escaping to the mixing - tube K is superheated by traversing the narrow channels formed between the parts K, L, H<1> to the burner J. The air-supply holes x in the piece G may be closed by packing as shown at y, Fig. 1, and the chimney holder V is formed with a perforated partition U', air being admitted to the lower part of the holder by a hole u<4>, and to the upper part by holes u<3> to cool the chimney. The piece E is provided with a lug F<4> for supporting the mantle rod, the valve I is built up as shown in Figs. 10 to 13, and the filling-tube A' of the reservoir A is closed by the engagement of a projecting ring a on the stopper A' with packing in the groove a<1>.
