Abstract

16,219. Speak, A., and Sedgwick, J. H. Sept. 12. Combined carding and spinning machines; processes.-The material is fed into the machine through a number of feedrollers A-B, of gradually-increasing diameter, and arranged so that dust and impurities may fall from the material into a receptacle on the space beneath. The swift D is rotated slower than usual and in the direction opposite to that in which the teeth thereon are set. The workers and clearers C-C<4> and E-E<4> are arranged alternately round the swift and are of gradually-increasing diameter as shown, or are otherwise so mounted and driven that their surface speeds are progressively increased from the feed to the doffer end of the carding-engine. The material is removed from the swift and laid on the doffer G by means of a roller F having radial teeth. The fibres may be removed from the doffer in a continuous fleece or, when a ring doffer is used, in a number of slivers, which are passed through a combined drawing and twisting apparatus K, K<1> before being wound on to the bobbins T. In the combined drawing and twisting-apparatus, a pair of drawing-rollers J, Fig. 5, are carried by one rotating pulley K, with their axes at right-angles to that of the pulley, and toothed wheels on the axles of the rollers engage with teeth on the face of the second pulley K<1>. The pulleys are driven independently, and at speeds which may be varied, so that the ratio of the amount of twist to the draught may be regulated as desired. The different parts are driven by belt &c. geariug from the main shaft S. When yarn of great uniformity is required, the bobbins T of lightlytwisted fibres may be mounted on a suitable creel and passed through a carding-machine such as that described in Specification No. 17,169, A.D. 1898.
