Abstract

16,167. Metz, A. Sept. 11. Paving.-Upon a cement foundation A of lime or ordinary cement is laid a comparatively narrow stratum B of melted asphalt or bitumen. In or on this rests a strengthening-frame for the layer E above, consisting of a metal trellis, preferably formed by slitting and stretching sheet metal, Fig. 1 ; or the strengthening-frame may be formed of perforated or recessed cement blocks roughened or striated at the top, Fig. 3. The top layer E is of asphalt, bitumen, rough porous gravel, and pulverized stone, well mixed and heated to a high temperature. Before this layer has had time to set, pulverized stone p is spread upon it and the surface is well rammed and rolled, producing a non-slipping surface.
