Abstract

13,818. Drake, W., and Kemp, B. W. Aug. 1. Blowing and moulding bottles &c.-Relates to apparatus for blowing bottles &c. The parison mould 11 consists of a tube sliding on a standard 12 so that it can be raised inside the two-part blowing-mould 1 as shown. The mould 11 is actuated by a lever 15, the tail end 17 of which is connected to a spring 18, and when raised is locked by a spring catch 19. Sufficient glass to form a bottle is placed in the mould 11, and the outer mould 1 is closed. A plunger 8, carried by a tube 31 sliding in bearings 32, is then lowered by a handle 24 so that it enters the mould 11, forcing the glass up into the neck part 60 of the outer mould 1. The plunger 8 works against a spring 35 in the tube 31, to prevent shock. The lever 24 is connected by a link 23 to a vertically-sliding bar 22, which, when lowered by means of a projection 21 into the position shown, moves the catch 19, and allows the spring 18 to operate the lever 15, thus suddenly lowering the parison mould 11. The descent of the har 22 also moves the lever 44 of an air cock admitting air from a reservoir through the pipe 39 to a valve chamber 48, the valve 49 of which is raised by the tail end 17 of the lever 15 as the parison mould descends, and allows the air to pass through the tube 38 to the plunger 8. Upon the plunger being raised by the lever 24, a valve 40 in its end opens, and the bottle is blown in the mould. The lever 24 is raised until it strikes a stop, before which a spring 46 raises the lever 44 and closes the air valve. The mould 1 is then opened, and the finished bottle removed. A stop is now retracted by a lever 53, and the lever 24 further raised, a crosshead 61 on the bar 22 lifting the lever 15 so as again to raise the parison mould 11 and at the same time allow the valve 49 to close. The various parts of the apparatus are made adjustable, so that lottles of different sizes can be made by a single machine.
