Abstract

13,543. Johnson, G. W., [Boehringer & S÷hne, C. F.]. July 27. Amines, obtaining.-Nitro compounds are reduced to the corresponding amines electrolvtically. The nitro compound mixed with hydrochloric acid is placed in the cathode compartment of the cell, which contains also a platinum or other indifferent cathode, and finely-divided iron, copper, chromium, lead, or mercury, or a salt of one of these metals. When the reduction has been effected, the motal is found to have been regenerated, or a metallic ion of low valency has been produced, according to the electrolytic solution - pressure of the metal. Examples are given in which nitrobenzene, which is kept cool and rapidly stirred during the process, is reduced to aniline by a current having a density of 1900 amperes per square metre, in presence of cuprous chloride, or copper powder, copper being left in both cases. In another example, ferrous chloride is used, and is regenerated as such.
