Sawing and like cutting cutting-out wires and blocks.-Relates to wire or similar sawing-apparatus for stone, and the invention is applied to tunnelling, quarrying, cutting columns or hollow articles of irregular forms, &c. Special forms of wire, chain, and other flexible cutters are described, and also the apparatus used. In stone-cutting yards, the flexible cutter Z is led round guide pulleys y on a jointed or other frame x, Fig. 7, arranged in the desired fashion for cutting out hollow articles, such as baths, troughs, &c., and the core left may be removed from the bottom by cutting round it with the wire Z, as shown in Fig. 9, the wire being led out through a hole l in the side over guide rollers. The block thus removed may be used for further manufacture of smaller troughs &c. In some cases the wire Z is led over guide rollers carried by permanent magnets or electromagnets, Fig. 17, being thus attracted and kept in place in irregular paths and these magnets may also aid in retaining the grit. For mouldings &c., the flexible cutter is guided by templates. The wire may also be rotated on its axis in addition to its longitudinal motion by rotating a frame carrying pulleys which embrace the wire. The wire may be run backwards and forwards between two drums on which it is wound alternately, or, in case an endless wire is used, any excess of length may be taken up by coiling the incoming side in an annular receptacle. The flexible cutter may consist of a core of one or more wires of round or other section coated with abrading material in several ways. For instance, it may be wound spirally with a strip of metal, leather, or textile material, having holes or grooves &c. to contain the grit &c. Or the core may be wound with one or more wires in the same or opposite directions or fitted with metal or other discs or small cylinders &c. to hold the cutting- material, or the discs or cylinders may be made of that material. Examples are shown in Figs. 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. Plates 30 of abrading-material may be held in sockets 31 threaded on the core wire 20, as shown in Fig. 30, or these sockets may be connected to form a chain and provided with driving-teeth.
