Abstract

13,299. Smith, J. L., Bedford, R., and South Durham Steel and Iron Co. July 24. Open-hearth processes.-Steel is produced by working charges contained in an open-hearth furnace having its hearth divided by dams or partitions into two or more compartments, and preferably in a furnace of the kind described in Specification No. 12,823, A.D. 1900, [Abridgment Class Furnaces &c.]. When working with a furnace having two compartments, one larger than the other, the smaller compartment may be charged with ore or other oxides of iron, such as mill scale and tap cinder, and with limestone, scrap, or other suitable materials, as may be desirable. This charge is then heated to a sweating heat, and metal is allowed to flow into the charge from the larger compartment over the dam. The metal flowing from the larger compartment is the overflow from a charge obtained by running metal from a blast furnace, mixer, cupola, converter, or the like into a bath of molten steel left in the large compartment after a previous tapping. Channels or gutters may be formed in the dam.
