Abstract
12,180. Raschen, J., Norman, F. J., Luxton, W. G., and United Alkali Co. July 5. Potassium, sodium, and calcium salts.-Relates to the manufacture of cyanides from sulphocyanides by treating the latter, in solution or suspension in water, with steam and nitric acid or its equivalent, and further treating the evolved gases as described in Specification No. 19,767, A.D. 1898. Reference is also made to Specifications Nos. 10,476. 10,956, and 21,678, A.D. 1895. Sulphocyanide liquor is gradually run through a pipe C, Fig. 1, into a vessel A, which contains either water or motherliquor from a previous operation, and is also supplied with steam through a pipe B, and excess of nitric acid or a mixture of sulphuric acid and sodium nitrate through a pipe D. The evolved gases pass off through a passage E and an outlet E'. The mother-liquor is passed through a passage F and perforations into a tower G, and flows over silica bricks, flints, &c., supported on a grid g and heated by steam from a pipe H. Hydrocyanicacid gas passes off by passages h, and the motherliquor by an outlet h<2>. An alternative form of tower is shown in Fig. 3, and contains superposed compartments or trays provided with nozzles h<3>, hoods h<4>, and overflow pipes f. The decomposing- tank A is shown as forming the top compartment of this tower.
