Abstract

10,527. Thompson, J. June 9. Anemometers.-In an apparatus for measuring the velocity of air currents, particularly in coal mines, the bearing e of the spindle a, which is operated by hemispherical cups c, is surrounded by a cup h in a chamber g filled with non-conducting liquid such as petroleum oil, which will lubricate and prevent access of dust, gas, &c. to the bearing. At the top of the spindle a flange o depends into an oil cup n in the steadying-bearing m. As the spindle rotates, a cam s alternately makes and breaks contact with a spring t, fixed to an insulating-block v, so as to close and open an electric circuit between two terminals y and w outside a tight-fitting or sealed casing k. The cups c are adjusted on the arms b by nuts d. A bell &c. is arranged in the electric circuit so as to determine the velocity of rotation, from which the velocity of the current and the amount of air passing per unit of time can be calculated.
