Abstract

9628. Lock, W. H., and Cox, H. L. May 25. Linotype machines.-Relates to improvements in the wiper mechanism of the Mergenthaler machine, (Specification No. 14,582, A.D. 1890). Fig. 1 shows a front elevation of the mould-wheel, the trimming-knives which face the mould slot o when it is in the vertical or ejecting position having been removed. After the linotype has been ejected, the mould-wheel recedes slightly from the trimming-knives, and it is at this moment that the wiping both of the knives and the face of the mould slot is effected. The wiper 4 is carried by. a sleeve 7 sliding on the vertical rod 10 and connected by a link 11 to the line-shifting lever 12 so as to reciprocate therewith. The front face of the wiper is of hard leather or soft brass, and the rear face of bristles, hard felt, oiled leather, &c. The return movement of the lever 12 takes place after the mould has moved into the horizontal or casting position and has been brought against the assembled matrices by an advance of the mouldwheel. During the return movement, therefore, the wiper acts on the trimming-knives only. Fig. 4 shows a front elevation, and Fig. 5 a plan view, of a modification adapted to meet the case of a mould-wheel bearing, say, four moulds on its face. In this case it is necessary that the upward stroke of the wiper should take place before the advance of the mould-wheel, as the wiper would otherwise be jammed between one of the moulds and the knives. The link 11 bears at its upper end a sleeve which engages in a slot in the segmental guide-plate 16. Through this sleeve passes a spring bolt 17, provided at its front end with a wedge or cam surface 18, and at its rear end with a block 21 having a cam surface 20. The lever 12 acts on the right-hand face of the block 21, and carries the upper end of the link 11 with it. Just before the conclusion of the left-hand stroke of the lever, the cam surface 18 comes in contact with a similar surface 19 formed on the plate 16. The bolt 17 is thus drawn forward clear of the lever 12, and a spring 23 rapidly draws the link 11 back to the initial position, the wiper being lifted before the mould-wheel makes any movement. On the return of the lever 12, the cam surface 20 enables the bolt to yield before the lever, so that the latter assumes once more its position on the right-hand side of the block 21. An antifriction roller may be carried in the block 21. Reference is made to Specification No. 21,770, A.D. 1899.
