Abstract
7567. Brown, H. P. April 24. Electric railways and tramways.-The rail bonds comprise a metallic plate held to the ends of the conductor or rails so that they may move relatively to it, an intermediate stratum or mass of metallic lubricant or plastic alloy adhering to both plate and conductor being inserted. As shown in Fig. 3, a copper plate i, which may be arched at the centre and may have flat or dished ends, is pressed against the webs of the rail ends by spring washers k under the fishplates, and the plastic alloy is placed between the plate and the rails. Directions are given in the Specification for cleaning the surfaces and applying the alloy. The copper may be protected from the spring washers by a strip of harder metal, and a retaining- strip m provided to keep the washers in place. A sheet of cork n, which may be attached to the copper plate, laps over it and keeps out dirt &c. Fig. 7 shows plain or grooved plugs v in the flange r of the rail dipping into the alloy contained in recesses in a base-plate, which acts as a bonding plate, while Fig. 10 shows the recess 9 for the alloy formed in the rail flange and lined with a copper tube. In this case, the plugs 8 are of T shape and are held in the angle fishplate, and may be connected by a bar lying in a groove therein.
