Dyes, artificial.-A bluish-black dye, which dyes cotton directly, is produced by boiling a mixture of equimolecular proportions of dinitro-oxydiphenylamine of the formula- and picramic acid or picric acid with sulphur and a sulphide of an alkali metal. The mixture is boiled in a reflux condenser apparatus for about 30 hours, and the solution produced is diluted with water and acidified by a mineral acid, or acted upon by a current of air, for precipitating the dye-stuff. The product is mixed with sodium sulphide before drying it, or before using it, in order to render it soluble.
