Abstract

5080. Lock, W. H., and Isherwood, H. March 17. Calliper and like gauges.-A micrometer gauge consists of a screw-threaded spindle 16, carrying the ram 17, and a number of screw-threaded tubular parts 14, 11, and 7. Rotary motion of the ram is prevented by a feather 24. The conical end of the part 14 is engaged by a nut 21. The outer threads on the part 11 are right-handed, while the threads on the part 14 and the spindle 16 are left-handed or vice versÔ. By rotating a thimble the ram is advanced or receded at a rate proportional to the sum of the pitches of the right and left handed screw-threads, while when a thimble 3 is rotated the motion of the ram is due to the difference of the pitches. A spring bar 26, secured to the thimble 1 by screws 27, carries a nose 29 adapted to engage a longitudinal slot in the hub 7 so as to lock the thimble with an index mark on it in alignment with a scale on the hub. From this scale the largest readings are taken ; the medium readings are taken from a scale on the part 8 ; and the smallest readings are taken from a scale on the edge of the thimble 3.
