Abstract

4264. Wall, B. C. F. March 6. Water-pressure engines.-Pairs of actuating-devices are mounted on a frame A, each pair comprising hollow plungers B, B<1>, sliding at their upper ends on stationary supply pipes C, C', and at their lower ends in cylinders D, D', a beam E connecting the plungers together. The ends of this beam are connected by rods E', E<2> to crank discs E', E<4> respectively on shafts E<5>, E<6>, journalled in bearings on the frame A, which may be connected to a common driving-shaft L. When a valve C<5> is opened, pressure water from an overhead tank flows through a pipe C<4> and pipes c<3>, C<2> to the pipes C, C', and thence past a valve F open on one or other of these to the plunger B or B', which is moved downwards for about three quarters of a stroke when that particular valve F is closed and a valve J is opened and exhausts the water to a tank H. The connections of the separate members B, B<1> are oppositely set at a difference of about three quarters of a stroke. Water from the tank H is forced by an injector I into a tank G, provided with a pressure gauge G', a water gauge G<2>, and a safety-valve G<3>, and connected to an air-compressor K driven from one of the shafts so that, when the supply tank for the pipe C<4> requires replenishing, the valve C<5> is temporarily closed and a valve C<7> in a pipe C<6> leading to the tank H is opened. Fig. 3 shows the actuating-devices for the valves F and J. The stem F<1> of the valve F is normally pressed downwards by a spring F<2>, abutting on a lug F<3> to which is pivoted a lever F<4> connected to a link F<5> and a pivoted arm F<6> which is engaged by a lug F<7> on the corresponding shaft E<5> or E<6>. The valve J has a stem J<1> pivoted to a lever J' fulcrumed on a bracket B<2> carried by the plunger, the ends of this lever carrying friction rollers J<3>, J<4> adapted to engage alternately with inclines J<5>, J<6> to open or close the valve. The plungers are provided with guide-pins which slide in guides A' on the frame A. Each beam E may, if desired, be connected at each end to two oppositely-arranged plungers, when the guide-pin and guide A' are omitted.
