Abstract
2292. Heidenstam, W. A. G. von. Feb. 5. Carbon and charcoal.-Wood, wood refuse, or the like is carbonized while under pressure in a retort 1 having a plunger 2, 3. which is forced upwards by hydraulic pressure. The material is preferably made i n t o briquettes, and pl aced upon the loose part 2 of the plunger and around one or more guide-rods 4, in such a manner that during the entire compression process the briquettes will not touch the walls of the retort. These briquettes are then covered by a loose guideplate or disc 9. Another layer of briquettes is then arranged, then another plate, and so on to the top, when the whole is covered by a hood 10 of metal plate or the like and lowered into the retort, which is provided with a cover 8 secured by swing bolts 6 and nuts 7. The hood 10 is used to prevent the charcoal from taking fire when it is to be removed and while cooling. The heating is effected in any suitable manner. When the process is finished, the charcoal mass, together with the hood, is removed, and allowed to cool while within the hood and thus out of contact with air. When the material is not made into briquettes, the division plates have flanges to prevent the material from touching the sides of the retort.
