Abstract

24,685. Titus, J., and Titus, W. Dec. 12. Excavating.-An endless chain of excavating- buckets c is carried by a frame E pivoted at a<1> to the upper part of a carriage or framework D, which is mounted on wheels b on a long truck B mounted on two or more rails A. The frame E is raised on the pivots a' by a rope i, and a windlass e<1> rotated by a crank or otherwise. Excavated material is discharged from the buckets to a shoot I leading to an endless-band conveyer H. An engine E<1> rotates a main driving-shaft F which communicates motion to the bucket shaft a<1> and a countershaft S' by endless belts. The truck B is moved on the rails A by an endless chain J and a shafs e<2> carrying worms gearing with worm-wheels on the wheel axles a<2>. The endless chain is driven from the countershaft by a clutch s<1>, plain and crossed belts u<4>, e<4>, and a sprocket-wheel mounted above two idle sprocket-wheels carried by the frame D. The frame D is moved at right-angles to the rails A on the truck B by a clutch on the countershaft, plain and crossed belts, and a pinion gearing with a spur-wheel on one of the wheel axles. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement of guide-rollers for supporting an endless conveyer belt A<4>, which carries the material from the belt H to the discharging point. Standards or bearings E<4> carry horizontal rollers B<4> and inclined rollers c<4> arranged so as to cause the belt to assume the shape of a trough. Perforations or oil-holes k<4> in the journals h<4> lead to the end pivots of the roller B<4>. Intermediate bearings carry intermediate rollers D<4>, and are perforated axially for the reception of oil. An oil-hole is made in the centre of each journal on the upper side so that the lubricant is supplied to the upper side of the journal and is carried round. Fig. 9 shows a chain-wheel which can be adjusted to compensate for the wear of the links. Radial sprocket teeth E' are arranged to slide in radial dovetail grooves in a disc A<7>, and are clamped to the disc by keys or bolts formed with wedge-shaped heads G<7>. The teeth are forced outwards simultaneously, when slackened, by a conical disc or drum m<7> which is connected to the sprocket-wheel by bolts R<7>.
