Folding paper; associating and collecting apparatus; cutting-apparatus; delivery apparatus.-Relates to apparatus especially intended for cutting printed sheets into shorter sheets or sections, assembling the sections in a pile, folding them together along lines parallel with their cut edges and finally slitting them at right-angles to their folds to produce signatures ready for binding. The sheets are placed singly, by hand or otherwise, on the feed-board F, and are carried by feed-rollers d, e to the cutters b, c by which they they are divided into sections. The passage of the sheets to the feedrollers is controlled by gauge-fingers h<2> mounted on the rock-shaft e<2>, the lower roller d being grooved to allow the fingers to come into the required position and the upper roller e being carried by arms on the rock-shaft. The sections are carried forward by the rollers i, j, and are thereby deposited on the tapes k, which travel at a higher speed than the feed-rollers and cutters and consequently separate the sections. In order to cut sheets of larger size, the feed-roller d is driven faster. Since, however, it is necessary that the cutters b, c, while in the act of cutting, should travel at the same speed as the paper, special means are provided whereby the drums carrying the cutters are temporarily accelerated while the cutters are in action, although the time taken for a complete revolution remains constant. To prevent the edges of the cut sections from adhering to the knifes b of the lower drum, clearing-fingers are provided, which are operated by fixed cams. The tapes k deliver the sections to rollers m, m*, near to which are mounted switch-fingers t. By means of these switch-fingers the sections belonging to alternate sheets are diverted downwards to the first folding-table J, or are allowed to travel forwards to the tape l, which carries them onwards to the second set of folding-apparatus. The sections of each sheet are carried down by the tapes o, and are assembled in order on one of the tables J. A presser P, operated by cam mechanism, holds down the rear edges of the sections already on the table at the moment that the front edge of the next section is ready to pass over them. When the sections are assembled, the folding-blade I presses them through a slot in the table, and the rollers L complete the folding. Finally, the folded sections are slit into signatures by the cutting-rollers N, and are delivered ready for binding.
