18,413. Lake, W. R., [Tanner, A. C.]. Sept. 12. Pressure members in guide-tubes.-Relates to the transmission of rotary motion from one shaft to another by means of a train of rollers in a guidetube. The invention is described in connection with a bicycle. The guide-tube, fixed to the frame by means of clips, is slotted at its ends to allow the wheels A and B to work into it ; the ends are bent inwards, being curves struck from the centres of the respective wheels ; the upper member of the tube is arched, and the lower member may be the same, or it may be bent downwards. As shown in Fig. 6, the tube is composed of two trough-shaped sections bolted together ; it is divided transversely at the centre to permit of adjustment for length. The rollers, Figs. 8, 9, and 10, each consists of an outer ring mounted by means of ball bearings upon a flanged cylinder, in two parts held together by a bush ; the outer ring may be flanged, as in Fig. 10. The rings bear against each other, and normally do not touch the tube, which is formed with tracks g for the flanges of the cylinders ; in the upper member the tracks are formed on the top side, Fig. 6, as in consequence of the curve the rollers are forced upwards by the driving strain ; at the ends, Fig. 7, they are formed at both sides, but so far apart that the cylinder cannot touch both sides at the same time ; along the lower member the tracks are at the bottom, and in back-pedalling the rings are forced up into contact with the top of the tube and act as a brake.
