Abstract

13,562. Johnson, J. Y., [Carley, H. S.]. June 30. Lifeboats.-Relates to the construction of collapsable and reversible lifeboats. Each consists of a buoyant frame or ring A from which is suspended, by canvas or netting D, a flat bottom E. The ring is composed of an inflated tube surrounded by cork, covered with canvas, and bound with rope. The canvas or netting D has a rope binding d to which are attached rings d' running on metal or rope bands d<2> on the frame or ring. The bottom consists of two layers of canvas enclosing longitudinal and transverse wooden slats. Canvas bands k secured to the rings d<2> form seats. On the outer side of the buoyant ring is a life-line H to which are attached loose lines i having floats i<1> secured to them. From the lower side of the bottom hangs a bag F weighted at f This bag forms a drag, and prevents the capsizing of the boat. Instead of being suspended from the bottom, the bag may be secured to the buoyant ring.
