Abstract

12,671. Brookes, A. G., [Upham, G. B.]. June 17. Driving-gear.-Relates to driving-gear for motor road vehicles and the like, in which the crank driving-mechanism of the motor is combined with the balance driving-gear of the vehicle wheels. Fig. 1 shows a fiont elevation of the motor crank shaft and the co-operating balance gear, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and Fig. 3 an end view. The vehicle wheels are mounted on tubular axles a, b, passing through the frame tubes A<1>, B<1>, and forming the supporting bearings of a two-throw crank shaft c<x>, d<x>. The two-throw crank shaft has tubular crank-pins c', d<1>, connected by a drag-link or distance-piece 25. Through the crank-pins extend short shafts, geared together by chain-wheels and a chain e<10>, and carrying at their outer ends toothed pinions e<1> which gear with spur-wheels A and B. One of these A is mounted fast on the axle a.; the other B is fast with a bevel-wheel g, through which it is geared with the axle b by bevel differential gear of which the spider G is fast on the crank shaft dx. It will be seen that this arrangement effects transmissional continuity between the axle a and wheel g, and the axles are therefore geared together by the bevel differential gear without interfering with the crank driving action. The two parts of the frame A', B<1> are rigidly connected by crank-like members A<10>, A<12> disposed in planes at right-angles to each other.
