Abstract

12,291. Barlow, H. B., [Gibbs, W. H.]. June 1.3. Bending; shearing.- Wire loom healds are made from a wire of two strands, soldered &c. together. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 show successive stages in the formation of a heald. The wire w is fed between constantly-driven friction feed-rollers 30, Fig. 3, and, when a shearing- blade 34 is in its lowest position, the amount of wire fed is determined by a stop 32. The shearing- blade then rises and cuts off this length, and remains raised to prevent further feeding until necessary. The ends are then bent round mandrels 44 by the rotation of the benders 37 with projecting segments 38. The bent ends of the wire then engage grooves 50 in twisters 51. A chisel 73 is then moved downwards to separate the strands at the centre to form the eye, Fig. 7. The twisters are then rotated to twist the body portion of the wire as shown in Fig. 8. Both the mandrels 44 and twisters are mounted to yield to allow for the shortening of the wire. The mandrels are then withdrawn into the benders, and the heald is pushed down wire guides to a trimming-mechanism, not shown, which is in duplicate, to shear off the surplus ends of the loops. Arrangements are provided to clamp the heald while being trimmed and to discharge it when finished. The twisters are driven through a clutch gear which is brought into operation, when required, by a cam.
