Abstract

11,771. Baggett, L. June 6. Filter-presses; strainers. -Relates to presses for expressing liquids from solids, as, for instance, oil from cotton-seed. The filter-cloth is in one piece, and is carried on drums v, Fig. 1, and rollers X pivoted to the boxes. It is folded into the boxes by plungers e, having rollers f, and yieldingly connected by springs i<1> to the crosshead k<1> of a hydraulic cylinder l or the like. Fig. 10 shows a plan of some of the boxes in the closed position. Secured to their backs y by drain bars x are perforated plunger plates m, adapted to telescope into the open ends of the boxes when the latter are pressed together by the ram D, Fig. 1. The sides of the boxes are closed by flanges h<2> of the channel-bars H. The cloth having been folded into the boxes, the funnels Q are lowered to clamp the cloth while the plungers e are withdrawn. The funnels are then filled from a hopper R, which, on starting its traverse over them, moves a grid Z to close their lower ends, by means of a pin and lever T The funnels Q, having discharged their contents into the boxes on the reverse motion of the grid Z, are raised, and the boxes pressed together. The sides through which they are filled, in this case their tops, are closed by plates a sliding in slots in the backs y, and carried on springs b, Fig. 5, which shows a section of the closed boxes. The springs are secured to the adjacent channel-bars H, and cause the plates a, on pressure being applied to the boxes, to move through the plates y and nip the two layers of cloth at the tops of the boxes. When a filter-cloth is not used, the plates a bed against the plates m. The drums v can be rotated to withdraw the cloth and strip the cakes. The plungers e and the funnels Q, and their connections, are carried on a frame M which is moved by screws N in slides L. These slides may be extended across a battery of presses, which can thus be served by one set of plungers and funnels.
