Methyl-#-sulphonic acids of primary aromatic amines of the constitution R.NH.CH2.SO3H, in which R represents an aromatic radicle, are produced by acting upon the anhydroformaldehyde compounds of primary aromatic amines of the constitution RN : CH2 with sulphurous acid or with an alkaline bisulphite in the presence or absence of a suitable solvent, and with or without moderate heating. Examples are given in which methyl-o-toluidine-#-sulphonic acid and methyl- #-naphthylamine-#-sulphonic acid are produced. Dyes, artificial.-Mixed amidoazo compounds are produced by coupling the foregoing methylamido-#-sulphonic acids with suitable diazo compounds, and then eliminating the CH2.SO3H group by acting upon the azo compounds with alkalies, alkaline carbonates, alkaline earths, or mineral acids. The decomposition commences in the cold, and is usually completed by slightly heating. Examples are given in which mixed amidoazo compounds are so obtained from the azo compounds resulting from the combination of diazotized p-nitraniline and monomethylaniline-#-sulphonic acid, or monomethyl-o-toluidine-#-sulphonic acid, the combination of diazotized m-nitraniline with monomethylaniline-#-sulphonic acid, and the combination of diazotized #-naphthylamine with monomethyl-o-toluidine-#-sulphonic acid.
