Shackles. - Relates to shackles for mooring and like purposes, which may be advantageously employed for mooring buoys, mines, ships' cables, and in harbour work generally, and on ships' decks &c. The screwed eye of the shackle is plain for about one-half of the thickness, as at e, and the pin is made to correspond. Under the head of the pin is placed a washer j of vulcanized fibre, wood, or other material which will expand when wetted.
