Abstract

9662. Rushton, W. L., and Baldwin, A. May 8. Forging; rolling. -Metal billets for the production of plates, bars, armour-plates, marine shafts, hollow shafts or tubes, boiler plates, ships' plates, &c. are formed by hammering or rolling together a number of muck bars a formed from suitable mixtures of scrap iron aud steel. The bars, when for circular billets, are formed segmental, and are kept in shape by sheet-iron sheaths b and end covers c The centre may be filled by a core d of soft-iron wire or tube, or, if a hollow billet is required, the centre is filled with silica or other retractory material which will elongate with the billet and may be subsequently removed. The arrangement of the pile varies with the shape of the article to be produced.
