Abstract

5374. Stanger, J. J. March 11. Electric baths; vaporizers.-Relates to apparatus for the medical treatment of the human body, by means of which the whole body or a limb thereof may be brought into contact with an electricallycharged fluid, which may be either a liquid or a vapour. Fig. 1 shows a form of apparatus in which a liquid is used, e.g. a tannin solution. A rectangular bath 4 is constructed of wood or other non-conductor of electricity. Along the two sides or ends are arranged carbon electrodes 5, supported in wooden frames 6 and supplied with current through metal connecting-pieces 9. An electric meter 1, resistances 2, and a switch 3 are provided for regulating the current. For treating only a portion of the body, the fluid may be directed through a nozzle 18 forming one of the electrodes, the other electrode consisting of a wire-gauze breast-plate 13, attached to the body by bands or straps. Alternatively, the patient may recline upon a conducting-plate arranged on the floor of the bath and forming one of the electrodes, while the fluid is directed on to the affected part by means of a nozzle. Fig. 3 shows the arrangement for using a vapour, such as steam. The vapour is generated in a vessel 21, heated by a fuel box 22 and having an outlet cock 28, to which is connected a nozzle 18 forming one of the electrodes, the other electrode 19 being secured to the body. A pair of vaporizers, or a single vaporizer with two discharge nozzles, may be used for directing two currents of vapour on to a limb. In another arrangement, the outlet tube of the vaporizer forms one electrode, which is gripped by the patient, while a metal rod within it forms the other. An arm bath provided with a metal electrode at one end, and a foot bath made of conducting-material forming one of the electrodes, are also described.
