Abstract
4925. Martino, F. W., and Stubbs, F. March 6. Metals, precious; gold.-Relates to the treatment of ores and the precipitation of precious metals from their cyanide solutions, and consists in a development of the method described in Specification No. 25,979, A.D. 1898. In this Specification, acetylene or calcium carbide is used as the reagent, but the present invention consists in employing any metallic carbide which produces a hydrocarbon gas when brought into contact with water, such for instance as aluminium carbide, which treated with water produces methane. The hydrocarbon gas so produced is passed through a cyanide solution of the precious metal, say gold, or a metallic carbide is added to the liquid ; in either case the gold is precipitated. The action of the gas is promoted by passing air through the liquid. The Provisional Specification states that oxygen may be used for this purpose. When the metals are combined or associated with metalloids or the baser metals, the ore or tailings are finely divided, mixed with a metallic carbide, and moistened. The gas generated frees the precious metals, which may be separated in any convenient way ; preferably the coarser metal is separated by washing, and the finer particles dissolved in a cyanide solution and subjected to the action of a hydrocarbon gas. Heat may be applied during any stage of the processes ; for instance, the cyanide solution may be heated by steam, and the mixture of ore and metallic carbide made be heated in a suitable furnace.
