Abstract

Dyes, artificial. -Relates to the processes described in Specification No. 12,011, A.D. 1897, and consists in producing first a disulpbonic acid of 1 : 7-dioxyanthraquinone by acting upon the latter compound with fuming sulphuric acid, containing 20 per cent. of free anhydride, at 90‹-100‹ C., and then cooling the solution and adding a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acids. After standing, the mixture is poured upon ice, and to the resulting solution is added potassium chloride for precipitating the dinitro-dioxyanthraquinone in the form of its potassium salt. This dinitro product is soluble in water and dyes wool in acid baths yellowish shades. When the foregoing dinitrodioxyanthraquinone disulphonic acid is reduced, for example by stannous chloride and hydrochloric acid, a diamidodioxy anthraquinone disulphonic acid is produced, which dyes wool in acid baths even violet shades, and chrome-mordanted wool blue shades. The diamido compound may be produced upon the fibre by first dyeing the fibre in an acid bath with the dinitro compound and then acting upon the impregnated material with a reducing-agent.
