Abstract

1349. Hulse & Co. and Bates, H. Jan. 19. Boring and drilling.-A machine for boring, drilling, and tapping armour or other plates has a bed 1 and a table 16. One or more carriages 3 slide on the bed, each carrying a standard 5 with a radial arm 7. The standard can be swivelled by worm gear 58. The drilling - headstock (not shown) is of ordinary construction, and is carried on a slide 13 on which it is angularly adjustable by worm gear 13<b>, the drill spindle being driven from a shaft 35. A screw 32, driven through a clutch 32<a> from the shaft 35, serves to traverse the slide 13. The shaft 35 is driven from a vertical shaft 38 geared to a belt-driven shaft 31 mounted in the bed. Each carriage is traversed by a revoluble nut engaging a screw 8 mounted in the bed. The nut can be clutched to a hand-operated worm-wheel or to a shaft driven through a reversing crown train 28, 29, 29a from the shaft 31. A belt-driven shaft may be provided for each carriage, or an electromotor may be mounted on each carriage, dispensing with the driving-shafts in the bed. Each carriage may have an independent screw 8. The drill spindle may carry a tap &c. in place of the drill.
