Abstract

27,596. Hollrieder, M. Dec. 31. Smoke, preventing and consuming.-In order to prevent the formation of smoke when the ashpit door or fire-door of a furnace is opened to remove slag &c., a blast of steam and air, or steam alone, is introduced into the furnace while the door is open, the blast being started before opening the door. Fig. 1 shows a furnace with an inclined step grate and air-heating passages a, a (shown in dotted lines) in the side walls. The heated air is delivered at d above the top of the grate, and at the front and back of the fire-chamber through slits f, f. Steam pipes c, c' are fitted in the air channels, with openings or nozzles opposite the slits f, f. Before the door g is opened, steam is admitted to these pipes. If it is desired to deliver steam alone into the furnace, the admission of air to the passages a is stopped by suitable valves.
