Abstract

18,032. Bohon, E. Aug. 22. Metals, precious; amalgamating; gold; platinum; silver.-Relates to a process for extracting the metallic contents of ores containing precious metals. The ores are ground and are mixed with mercury, cyanide of potassium, and some material to prevent the decomposition of the cyanide such as lime and salt. The cyanide first dissolves the gold which escapes direct amalgamation, and the solution thus obtained is decomposed by the mercury, so that, at the close of the treatment, all the gold is obtained as an amalgam, which is subsequently heated under pressure and then treated with nitric acid to obtain the precious metals. In the case of some ores, the baser metals may be previously separated in the form of soluble sulphates, by fusing the ores with a mixture of sulphur and sodium carbonate or other suitable flux.
