Abstract
17,434. Tõnzler, C. G. Aug. 12. Magic-lantern apparatus.-Panoramic illusions are produced by means of lantern projections of photographs or other representations of nature. Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of the lantern and projection apparatus for producing the illusion of a balloon voyage, and Fig. 3 a sectional elevation of a building in which the projection apparatus is fixed and in which the desired balloon illusion is produced, the apparatus in this instance being fixed above the spectators. A stand b, Fig. 3, is fixed at the centre of the building a, to represent the basket of a balloon or parachute c. From the apparatus d the views are thrown down by means of suitable lenses to the white spherical screen f. The projection apparatus, Fig. 1, comprises lamp lenses h and h' and reflectors i arranged around the carbons L. From the lens h the light traverses a second lens h<1> and the picture m, which is wound on cylinders n, n. These cylinders rest in a receptacle x floating in a water trough, this construction permitting of the oscillations of the picture film. Thence the light traverses a strip o upon which cloud effects or colouring tones are placed, and a plate p which produces an artificial horizon. Light also traverses the lens h<3>, the circular plate q carrying sky colours, and the plate r having representations of cloud effects thereon. The plate t, which is silvered with a mirror surface a distance corresponding with the cutting out of the plate p, is also provided. By lowering or raising the framework f<1> which carries the lens head z, the size of the representation of the landscape may be varied. The oscillatory movements of the picture can also be produced by loosely attaching the bottom of the casing, which carries the projecting - apparatus, to the bottom of a reservoir which contains water. Another method is to arrange the mirrors movably, in which case floating the apparatus or the films would be dispensed with.
